By default, 2Gb is reserved for the operating system and 2 Gb is reserved for applications. However, you may find that this is not sufficient if you are attempting to view extremely large studies using eFilm. This article describes how to change the distribution of address space so that 3 Gb is available for use by applications.

Caution: Reducing the amount of address space available to the operating system may impair the performance of your computer. You have been warned.

System Requirements:

eFilm 2.1.2 or later

Windows XP Professional

3 Gb RAM (minimum)

To increase the available address space for eFilm:

Locate the BOOT.INI file in the root folder of your C:\ drive.

Double-click the file to open it in Notepad.

You should see text that looks like the following. Your file may vary slightly depending on the operating system you are using:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

After the last switch on the last line, add "/3GB," so that the revised line looks like:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /3GB

Note: The settings shown in the example will vary by machine. It is not necessary to make your boot.ini file look just like the example; all you need to do is add the '/3GB' switch.

Information shown in eFilm's right-click context menu and thumbnail panel

Abstract:
This article describes the information displayed by eFilm's right-click context menu (RCCM) and thumbnail panel.

Context menu information

Information displayed at the Patient level

<Patient Name>

Information displayed at the Study level

<Study Date>, <Study Time>, <Accession #>, <Modalities in Study>, <Study Description>

Notes:

Study Date, Study Time, and Accession # have no modifiers/exceptions

Modalities in Study is a 'list' delimited by /'s (eg. This is done by creating different sets of user permissions for the hanging protocol database. Essentially, the process works by creating a second database user with read-only privileges for the database, then creating a second instance of Visualization Service that accesses the database via the read-only user. The diagram below illustrates the resulting configuration:

If you are using eFilm 2.1.0, you will have to set up the read-only visualization service on a second web server. eFilm 2.1.2 adds the ability to run two visualization services on the same web server.

Setting up a second Visualization Service on a separate web server (eFilm 2.1.0/2.1.1)

To set up a read-only visualization service on a second web server (high-level procedure):

Install Visualization Services normally. (You can skip this step if you have already installed Visualization Services.)

Run the script attached to this article to create a read-only database user.

On a second web server, install Visualization Services without the database (web service only) and set that service to log on to the database using the read-only database user.

Set up the eFilm client workstation to access Visualization Services using the read-only service.

Step One: Install Visualization Services.

Install eFilm Visualization Services normally, following the procedure described in the Knowledge Base article "Installing a Visualization Services server," available here. There are two basic scenarios under which a single instance of efSvChld.exe might be consuming excessive amounts of CPU time; your goal is to identify which situation the user is experiencing and suggest a remedy.

Scenario 1: efSvChld.exe is downloading a large DICOM file

In this case, the log file might look something like this:

07/14/2006 15:11:52 Server child started (PID = 5592)
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Create Event 1
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Create Event 2
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Done Creating Events
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Current Number of Children is 1
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Running Server Child
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Initialization complete
07/14/2006 15:11:52 New Image Event Created
07/14/2006 15:11:52 Multiplex successful
07/14/2006 15:11:52 About to Receive Images
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Reading PET file (SOPPETStorage.Read)
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Saving 1.3.12.2.1107.5.1.4.41110.5.0.34632742369894, 2-bed test, 20040112
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Done Reading File
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Pulse Event (NewImageEvent.PulseEvent)
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Send Message
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Reading PET file (SOPPETStorage.Read)
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Saving 1.3.12.2.1107.5.1.4.41110.5.0.34632742369894, 2-bed test, 20040112
07/14/2006 15:11:53 Done Reading File
...etc. for however many images got copied before you grabbed the log file.

Note that you won't see anything closing the associatio

Installing a Visualization Services server

Abstract:
This document describes how to set up a Visualization Server for eFilm 2.0 or later. Whenever a new server goes live, it is impractical to manually update the remote device list on every eFilm workstation. To simplify this task, eFilm’s Enterprise Management feature can retrieve a list of servers from a central SQL database to update the local list.

This document describes how to configure the eFilm Enterprise Management (efEM) feature, which applies to eFilm 1.8.0 build 14 and later. The following points should be kept in mind when setting up a site license:

Server licenses have a Concurrent User Limit — only “x” number of clients can use a server license at one time. This value is set when the license is purchased.

When you purchase a site license, you will be asked to provide two reference codes — one from your primary license server, and another from your optional secondary server. You will then be issued one or two license keys (depending on whether or not you provided a secondary reference code), one for each server.

There are three steps to setting up an eFilm Site License:

Set up a primary license server.

Set up an optional secondary license server to be used as a backup in case the primary server is down.

Set up the client workstations.

Setting up a Primary License Server

The primary license server hosts the license for the site.

To set up a primary license server (high-level procedure):

Designate one machine on the site's network to act as the primary license server. This is where the primary license will reside.

Install eFilm on the primary license server.

Obtain a server reference code from eFilm.

Enter the license key in eFilm.

To obtain a server reference code:

Launch eFilm and open the License Summary dialog (available from the registration dialog when eFilm starts up for the first time, or by selecting Help > Licensing... within the application).

Select the products you want to license (hold Ctrl to select multiple products).

Click Server. A dialog box appears with one or more reference codes.

<IMG hspace=0 src="http://www.merge-efilmknowledgebase.com/Attachments/

Why is efSvChld.exe slowing down my system?

Abstract:
This article describes several scenarios in which efSvChld.exe might consume too much processing power, causing eFilm to respond slowly to user input. Merge eMed Service can help you identify which scenario applies to your situation, and can assist in resolving the problem.

There are two classes of scenarios in which efSvChld.exe can consume too many system resources. Essentially, either there are many instances of efSvChld.exe running simultaneously, or there is a single instance that is slowing things down.

Multiple instances of efSvChld.exe are running

There are two reasons why you might have many instances of efSvChld.exe running simulaneously:

You are attempting to retrieve many studies at once. If this is the case, simply retrieve fewer studies to relieve the load on your system.

A remote system has been configured to send studies to eFilm one image at a time. In this case, a separate instance of efSvChld.exe is spawned for each image. The remedy here is to modify the sending system to create series-level associations instead.

One instance of efSvChld.exe is running

There are two reasons why one instance of efSvChld.exe might use too much processing power:

efSvChld.exe is retrieving a large DICOM file or is updating the Study Manager and eFilm viewports with study and image data. If this is a frequent occurrence, you may consider scheduling sending or receiving of large studies at times when the workstation is not expected to be used for reading images. Alternatively, you should examine the capabilities of the hardware running the eFilm software. Adding up to 2GB of memory will improve performance. After that, consider upgrading the CPU of the computer.

efSvChld.exe cannot close its association with a remote server, because the remote server has improperly terminated its end of the connection. The efSvChld.exe log file can help you determine the

Enabling efSvChld.exe logging

Abstract:
This article describes how to enable logging for the efSvChld.exe process. This can be used to help you in identifying performance issues related to this process, as described here. You can enable efSvChld.exe logging by adding a key to the Windows registry.

WARNING! The Windows Registry is a critical component of the operating system. If you make an error modifying the Registry you could seriously impair your system’s ability to function correctly or even boot. If you are not familiar with modifying the system Registry, you should find someone who is familiar with it to perform these steps.

To enable efSvChld.exe logging:

In the Windows Registry Editor, create a DWORD ServerChildLog key in:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOTWARE\eFilm Medical\eFilm\Settings

A value of 1 enables logging and 0 disables it. Each efSvChld.exe that is spawned has its own log file created in the eFilm LOG folder (default C:\Program Files\Merge eFilm\eFilm\LOG). The log file is named as follows:

SERVERCHILD_ProcessID_HHMMSS.LOG

...where ProcessID corresponds to the process ID of the efSvChld.exe process (as in the Windows Task Manager) and HHMMSS is the creation time of the log file (i.e. when the efSvChld.exe process was spawned). For example, an efSvChld.exe process with process ID 3932 spawned at 16:20:07 will create a log file that is named SERVERCHILD_3932_162007.LOG.

Important: Because each log file is automatically deleted when the association has ended, you must view or copy the file during an association that has encountered performance issues.

Migrating eFilm site licenses from eFilm 2.1.0 to eFilm 2.1.2

Abstract:
In eFilm 2.1.2 we made changes to the site license server for eFilm that we believe will improve reliability and be more secure. The new mechanism is based on a true client-server implementation and no longer requires that you have a shared folder available on the server. The new version is not backward compatible with the old version. Specifically:

a new eFilm 2.1.2 client cannot use the 2.1.0 site licensing mechanism

an existing 2.1.0 client cannot use the new 2.1.2 site licensing mechanism

The licenses themselves ARE backward compatible; in other words, your 2.1.0 license should continue to work for 2.1.2.

Because of the two license versions are incompatible, it can be awkward migrating a site from one version to the next. This document describes how to migrate a site license from eFilm 2.1.0 to eFilm 2.1.2. We present two approaches for performing the migration: the easiest approach can be used at sites running a secondary license server; the other approach must be used if the site is using only one license server.

Migrating from eFilm 2.1.0 to eFilm 2.1.2 using a secondary server

If your 2.1.0 site is running a primary license server on A and secondary on B:

Keep the 2.1.0 license server running on Server B.

Upgrade Server A to 2.1.2 and configure it with a new license server license. Now the 2.1.0 clients will not find the primary license on A, so they will fallback to the secondary on B.

As you install 2.1.2 clients, configure them to use Server A as the primary server, and Server B as the secondary server.

Note: You will be warned that B is not running the 2.1.2 server - don't worry about this. We're assuming that you won't ne

eFilm Client Licensing does not work in Register dialog

Abstract:
This document describes a workaround for Siebel Defect 1-3SH71 - eFilm Client Licensing does not work in Register dialog.

Problem

After upgrading a client machine to 2.1.2, eFilm first looks for an existing local license. If there is no local license, the Register dialog will be displayed. Clicking Register displays the License Type dialog. Clicking Client displays the Client License dialog. If you try to configure the licensing server, the verification will always fail.

Solution

The workaround is to click Evaluate in the Register dialog first and start eFilm in evaluation mode, then configure site licensing from the eFilm "Help > Licensing" dropdown menu. However, this workaround will not work if eFilm has been previously evaluated on that machine. In that case, it is necessary to modify the registry.

Select Start > Run.

Type regedit and press Enter to start the Registry Editor.

Navigate to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AcuData\Sheriff\ProductID\5366-8721-2229-7642-5711\

Add the following registry keys (values inside the quotes):

Name

Type

Data

"LicenseType"

REG_DWORD

"1" for site licensing

"PrimaryServerHost"

REG_SZ

e.g. "10.243.253.87"

"PrimarySe

Installing a new version of eFilm Workstation

Abstract: Question: I have 3 licenses and now I see there is a 2.1 version. I have the 2.0 version. How can I download the newer version. I don’t see the option for people who are already licensed, only new licenses.Answer: You can download eFilm Workstation at any time from our web site, install the software and the software will recognize your existing license and apply it to your new installation of eFilm. There is no need to "repurchase" eFilm to do this as all product updates are included in your purchase price so long as you have a valid license. This applies to all users of eFilm 1.9.X and higher.

eFilm Workstation License

Abstract: Question: My hard drive crashed. However, some of the Advanced Visualization plugins are either unable to operate, or experience restricted functionality, without the full DICOM file available locally.

Incompatible plugins

The following Advanced Visualization plugins cannot be used with ImageChannel studies:

AccuStitch

AccuEdit

SmartGate

Functionality restrictions for ImageChannel studies

This section describes the restrictions that apply to Advanced Visualization plugins when viewing ImageChannel studies:

IlumiView

IlumiView's utility is extremely limited when using ImageChannel studies; we highly recommend using this plugin only on local DICOM studies. The following restrictions apply to IlumiView when viewing ImageChannel studies:

cannot segment the colon

must create the flight path manually

Visual Guide normally shows only the segmented colon; since the colon cannot be segmented with ImageChannel, the Visual Guide shows a volume-rendered view of the entire series with nothing hidden

cannot create parametric overlay

Projector Pro, VRX

Cannot create DICOM files.

eFilm fails to start, showing only the splash screen

Abstract:
<?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:line id=_x0000_s1026 style="Z-INDEX: 1; LEFT: 0px; POSITION: absolute; TEXT-ALIGN: left" strokeweight="1.5pt" o:allowincell="f" to="442.8pt,2.5pt" from="-3.6pt,2.5pt"></v:line>This article describes how to manually register the XML 4.0 parser in order to make eFilm start.

Symptoms

When trying to launch eFilm Workstation, it fails to start - only the splash screen appears.
